Two blocks of rental flats located at Cantonment Road in Tanjong Pagar were built in 1963 and lasted for nearly 40 years before its demolition to build new flats which are currently known as the 50-storey flats at The Pinnacle@Duxton. The then Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew, who was also the Member of Parliament for Tanjong Pagar, announced in 2001 that Duxton Plain had been earmarked for estate renewal as part of an island-wide strategy to revitalise aged sections of the city centre. As the rental blocks were part of the estate, they were demolished to be redeveloped into HDB's tallest blocks.
