Siglap's 5-storey flats

Four blocks of flats standing at 5 storeys high are located at East Coast Road near the bungalows at Frankel Estate in Siglap. The flats consisting of all 2-room units were built in 1963 to rehouse the Kampong Siglap residents who were homeless during a fire sparked by firecrackers during the Chinese New Year celebrations the year before. As a result of the fire which damaged about 50 attap houses, the HDB moved in quickly to build these blocks at the site of the destroyed kampong to house the victims. The flats used to be standing near the coastline facing the sea and the beach. However, these features disappeared when East Coast was being reclaimed in the late 1960s to build Marine Parade Estate. However, in this small ageing neighborhood with mostly elderly residents in a prime area made up of condominiums and landed properties, these flats were selected for the Selective En-Bloc Redevelopment Scheme(SERS) and the last residents moved out to their replacement units by 2015.

Outram Park Complex used to be the site of Outram Prison for more than a century before it was demolished in 1966 to make way for this housing project as part of the Urban Renewal Scheme. It was one of the first complex to have a mixture of residential units and commercial shops in the Central Business District Area. A total of 12 16-storey blocks were all connected to form a shopping complex with 2 multi-storey carparks located at each end of the estate. They were completed between 1968 and 1970 before the-then Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew officiated its opening. 5-room flats in the 1970s

HDB introduced the design of 5-room point block flats in 1971 as a bold and imaginative move which would eventually help to bring down the cost of middle-class housing as the economy was improving at that time. Therefore, applicants whose income ranged from $1200 to $1500 per month would be eligible for registration to apply for 5-room flats. Each level of a 5-room point block served 4 units for privacy purposes. Toa Payoh in the 1960s

During the 2nd Five-Year Plan between 1965 and 1970, about 95,000 of Singapore's population moved into the new flats at Toa Payoh with a total of around 18,000 units. It is the first HDB Estate to introduce the Improved flats for 3 room units where each flat has an extension of the kitchen and balcony together with a separate bathroom and toilet. Such flats in those days cost $7500.
